Analyzing goals: With Reverend Parris fearing for his reputation, he desperately tries to convince Abigail Williams to confess to Witchcraft
Abigail:(scared) Uncle, talk of witchcraft and the devil is descending upon the town like fog, its obscurity has left many in fear. Uncle, you must dismiss this gossip. Parris: (vocally upset) What should I tell them? That you two were dancing in the woods? Why has Betty not woken yet? Abigail: (defensibly) We danced but not through the will of the Devil, and Betty is not bewitched. Parris: (kind but firm)Abagail. I need the truth from my neice. The congregation needs the truth. My niece has not told me the truth. I will go no farther until I know the whole truth and normorelies from my niece. (Emulation by putting himself as the uncle by referring to her as the niece, he puts her in an inferior position of power through his ethos). Abigail:(nervously). We danced but when you surprised us Betty fainted from the fear. That is all Uncle. Parris: (quiet but harsh)Betty, should you have spoken with what lurks in the forest I must know. They will ruin me. The enemies around Salem will destroy me. I will make sure you are safe by God, my enemies will not (seem to take the middle course). Do you understand? Abigail:(curt) I understand. Parris:(quiet but harsh once again) there is a faction with the intent of driving me from God and the church. Do you understand? If you Abigail:(curt) I understand Parris:(rising in volume until is an aggressive whisper) But now, in all the chaos and fear around me. The two of you throw more straw into the fire with your obscene practices and heretical behavior. Abigail:(curt) It was only a game Parris: (intimidatingly) I witness Tituba spurting gibberish and dancing around the fire moving in tandem with the occult. Abigail: (frustrated) She sings her songs from Barbados and then we dance. Parris:(getting visible red) I cannot and I must not hide what I saw because those working against me will certainly not. I saw something dash through the trees naked. Abigail: (curt and dismissive) There was no such thing uncle. Parris: (quiet once again with a touch of sadness) My eyes do not lie, I saw the naked figue dash among the trees and those against me will as well. Now, My ministry, my livelihood, my niece and your cousin are at stake. Now tell me all of what you have done before so I may be prepared for what lies ahead or we will all fail (controlling the tense, choice).
